Mercer Island is named after the pioneer Thomas Mercer. The island community rests within Lake Washington just across the bridge from Seattle and it is a one-of-a-kind place as either a place to live or to have a weekend getaway. It is also the most populated island in a lake in the whole United States, with an estimated population of over 26,000 people in 2019. It’s also a very wealthy area, the fifth in Washington.
The island enjoys warm and dry summers, making it very pleasant for visitors and residents alike. Notable people from Mercer Island include Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, comedian Joel McHale, NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, and former president of the United States Barack Obama’s mother Ann Dunham. The city has a year-round Farmers Market, of which a special version called the Harvest Market taking place each November.

On the northeast end of Mercer Island, you will find the Luther Burbank Park, where you don’t have to walk a lot to find an amazing view of Lake Washington. Amenities include swimming, boating, and fishing. In order to protect the local wildlife, most of the park has been left undeveloped.
